It is hard to avoid addict analogies when discussing the politics of oil these days. Just like the junkie who’ll do anything to get one more hit, the GOP is hellbent on squeezing every last drop of oil out of US soil, environment be damned. Why bother to aspire towards cleaner sources of energy or teaching citizens to understand that efficiency and conservation are patriotic ideals to espouse? The answer, of course, is that oil will quickly become scarce regardless of whether we drill on the White House lawn or not, that petro-pollution is killing our wildlife and sickening our children and that the ability to drive huge SUVs does nothing in the end to make people happy, well adjusted individuals.
The political inertia on this matter under George Bush has reached a level of absurdity that now borders on suicidal. The GOP has other bed-fellows. It is time for real change.
